This topic summarizes primary new features included in the latest major version of RC-WinTrans.
RC-WinTrans 12 introduces improvements and optimizations throughout the UI. UI texts have been condensed and dialogs have been streamlined. The selection mechanism and inline editing capabilities have been updated as well.
Text sizes in the RC-WinTrans UI are adjustable for optimal visibility. Select individual sizes for display text used in: ● the Menu bar; ● list and tree views; ● toolbar buttons; ● the Text Table view; ● the Source and Target edit fields in the Translation Edit bar.
Translation sources are automatically selected for the active project language and can be tapped for any of the following: ● finding and getting translations. ● translation suggestion using fuzzy matching. ● assigning a translation with or without the option to match by unique resource item ID. See also: Translation Sources dialog box.
Translation and import/export operations in RC-WinTrans 12 use unique item IDs in all the files of a translation project, in files used to import/export data, and in dictionaries. This lets translations be correctly assigned to resource items when a translator returns a file (e.g., a TMX or Excel file) and translations are imported into the main project. Item IDs are also saved in dictionaries and translation memories (TMs).
Direct access to both of these options is provided via menu and toolbar commands, eliminating the need to open and change settings.
Translation Memory Exchange (TMX) files require no initialization and are easy to use for translation. Support for TMX files in RC-WinTrans 12 inludes: - the ability to store translations in multiple languages. - import and export functions for this file format. - included as translation sources for finding, getting, and saving translations. - using each TMX element's unique resource item ID to correctly assign translations.
Excel files (.xlsx) can be used as translation sources to facilitate the translation process by finding and inserting translations for source texts. When enabled as a translation source, an Excel file is listed in the Dictionaries view and available to the same translation operations as dictionaries. Other improvements to Excel file support introduced with RC-WinTrans 12 include support for multiple language columns and using item IDs to accurately assign translations.
Translation projects can also be used as translation sources. Whenever a project is listed in the Projects view, it's available to be referenced by translation operations, just like a dictionary.
Whenever a project is closed,
it gets removed from the Projects
view - this is the default behavior.
The item ID is now part of the data saved for SDL Trados TM files (.sdltm), along with the origin, source text, and translation text. TMs can also be used as translation sources and included in operations that reference them.
RC-WinTrans 12 has import and export functions for XLIFF 2.0/QuickShip files, allowing data to be stored and transferred in this format. These file types can also be referenced as translation sources. Each element in an XLIFF 2.0 file holds a unique resource item ID which is carried over into the translation project and used to ensure accurate translation assignment. A QuickShip exchange file also has resource groups that can store additional item data the same as in a translation project. More info on QuickShip...
The Machine Translator add-on can also be used as a translation source with the same handling and integration as other translation sources.
The new Found Translations view shows matching translations found in available translation sources. The source text, translation text, match value, and origin are given for each found translation. You can also search for translations right in the view with the search field provided, and a new toolbar offers commands to find translations with or without requiring a match by item ID. Hover over the toolbar buttons to display tooltips with information about the number of available translation sources available for the current source and target languages.
Multiple entries/translations for a single source text are now supported for TMs. The TM Workbench add-on has been updated to work with RC-WinTrans 12 and TMs from SDL Trados. The RC-WinTrans TM Workbench for working with SDL Trados TM files (.sdltm) is available for free to Version 12 license holders.
RC-WinTrans 12 licensing is handled by a license server that tracks and activates trial periods as well as purchased licenses. A single-user license of RC-WinTrans is allowed two installations by the owner. An installation can be moved to another computer by uninstalling or deactivating RC-WinTrans on the original machine, then installing the software on the new machine and activating the license there.
Trial periods and subscription activations for the Machine Translator add-on are now managed by a license server.
The RC-WinTrans UI is now available in Spanish (in addition to English, German, French, and Japanese languages).
